Halogen is one of the materials typically used to make jackets, as insulation of electric and telecommunication cables, especially those made of PVC or FEP (Fluoropolymer). PVC cables are classified according to their flame-retardant ratings as CM, CMP-Plenum, CMR-Riser, CMX. All of them contain halogen compounds which under normal circumstances are very stable and do not pose any hazards. Problems arise during combustion if they catch fire, as the gases and smoke released by these cables are extremely toxic to infrastructures, which can also be dangerous to human health and life. |
